Sikkim: One of the Fastest Growing Economies in India
Sikkim wasn’t fully integrated into India until 1975. The state is considered landlocked, and it was the last state to give up its monarchy. Positioned in the Himalayan mountains, the state is surprisingly populous, with the 2011 census including over 607,000 residents. The state has transformed itself in recent years. The figure makes the state the third-smallest GDP among all states in India. Agriculture is the main driver of the economy, which is considered agrarian. Rice, maze, millet, oranges, tea, wheat and barley are among the state’s most cultivated crops. Cardamom is also produced in the state. In fact, the state is the biggest producer of cardamom in India. The state doesn’t have a large industrial base. Instead, many of the vacancy in Sikkim revolves around watchmaking, tanning, brewing and distilling. Mining is also present on a small scale. The smaller state has been growing rapidly, with the GDP growing by 89% in 2010 alone. Tourism has also been highly promoted, with the revenue in the state increasing 14 times as a result since the mid-1990s.
